SAINT JOHN • A few weeks shy of turning 80, Vangie Mofford said she sees “no end in sight” for her a capella career.

Not until they carry me out in a pine box,” Mofford said jokingly.

She is celebrating 40 years of service with the Sea Belles A Capella group in Saint John. Mofford’s husband Mel is also an avid singer, and has been with the Men of Fundy barbershop chorus for 33 years.

One thing they say about barbershop music is you either love it or you hate it, and it was love at first sight,” Mofford said.

Since joining the Sea Belles, Mofford said she has held many positions throughout the organization, from president to treasurer, and now music chair. She has travelled as far as Chicago and Florida through her involvement, but above all, she has gained a new family with a capella.

We’re a small family, we’ve only got one daughter and one grandson, but I feel like I’ve got many many in my family because we have our barbershop family,” Mofford said. “ … You have no idea the closeness that evolves with these ladies.”
